Extra Credit

Today I went to see the Bruce Nauman video in the PMA and I was pretty overwhelmed with the noise it was making and having to watch the video on both walls. Even though it was overwhelming, I thought it was really cool how the video was surrounding the audience. It almost felt like I was a part of the video because I kept walking around to different parts of the video to analyze it and in the video it first appears that people are walking but once you look closer it's just people doing contrapposto poses. However I was confused by the way the hand gestures in the video, they had they're hands behind their head like a police officer would tell you to do.

Research continuation

Paul McCarthy- "Painter"
This video was by far the weirdest video I've ever seen. I had so many questions while watching it like, why are his hands and ears obnoxiously big? What in the world is he saying? Why are the paints and paint brushes so large? Why is he so anxious? This video made me feel very uncomfortable, the way he's talking to himself almost reminds me of schizophrenia.

Dana Birnbaum- "Kiss the Girls and Make Them Cry"
I watched a clip from this movie and in the beginning a woman is pretending to fight someone. The change from the clips makes it look like she's fighting herself, which I thought was really cool. Then it got a little weird a man dressed like darth vader wanted to give her s shot of some substance and the woman ended up knocking him out.

Valie Export- "Zeit und Gegenzeit"
I thought this video was pretty confusing, probably because they were talking in a different language. But i also didn't know what the working men were doing. Like what was that hot liquid they were pouring, and what were they doing with those big cement rocks. However, I thought it was pretty cool how she integrated the double scissors throughout the video. That was the one thing that caught my eye throughout the whole thing.

Bill Viola- "Reflecting Pool"
In the beginning this video really creeped me out because it's based in nature and then a man just comes up and stands by the pool looking at the camera, I felt like I was watching a horror movie. Then he jumps in the pool but the video pauses it when he's in the air. Throughout the video the man in the air starts vanishing into the background until he's completely gone.

Matthew Barney- "Cremaster Cycle Trainer"
In the beginning I actually enjoyed the video, the nature scenes where so calming. But then it started to get weird, people were dressed as weird creatures I've never seen before in movies, but I still enjoyed it I thought the makeup on them was interesting. I started to dislike the video when the rest of the scenes were all the creatures dying in gruesome ways.

William Kentridge- "Automatic Writing"
I really enjoyed watching this video, it was very calming. I love how he animated drawings, It was like he made the drawings actually come to life. I also enjoyed the little details like in one of the first scenes the drawing was still except the water was the only thing moving.

Peter Campus- "Three Transitions"
This video really stuck out to me, it really grabbed my attention. I think his idea was so cool, it was like we were watching him through another universe or another perspective.

Nam Jun Paik- "Global Groove"
At first I was not impressed with this video, it was just two people dancing it wasn't very visually interesting. However, I was glad to see that the artist put affects in the back of the dancers and the affects gradually took over the bodies. The video definitely got more interesting but this video didn't particularly stand out to me

Ryan Trecartin- "I-BE AREA"
This video was extremely bizarre, I don't even know how else to describe it. It didn't really strike me as being art, it just seemed like a weird video that pre teens would do for fun. But in a creepier way.

Tony Cokes- "The Thing I Need"
I surprisingly thought this video was pretty cool. The video started singing "the thing I need" and then it just stopped and the rest of the video just had the words on screen. At first I thought the video paused but the time kept going. I think his goal was to get a confused reaction from his audience and he definitely achieved it.

Sam Taylor Johnson- "A Little Death"
This video really grossed me out but I couldn't stop watching it. The dead rabbit kept decaying and in the end it looked like a tree truck. However, what confused me was the fact that the rabbit was decaying but the peach next to it wan't.

Ray Harryhausen -"The Ray Harryhausen Creature List"
I really enjoyed this video, obvious his stop motion skills are impeccable. If I didn't know he was a stop motion artist I wouldn't have even realized he used the stop motion method because it flowed together so well.

The Science of Sleep

After watching trailers from The Science of Sleep I'm actually interested in watching the whole movie. It seems like a cute romcom I'd watch with my friends. The trailer itself was visually interesting and intriguing so I can't even imagine how the actual movie would be. The weird dreamlike scenes are confusing so that makes the viewer want to watch the movie to find what those dreams mean. I also like how the director uses subtle actions to carry into the next scene. Like the part where the phone rings in his dream and he answers it in real life. Also when he's playing with the little toy horse and the scene changes to Stephan and Stephanie riding the horse.

Research

Andy Warhol- Andy Warhol Eating a Burger
When I typed in Andy Warhol on Youtube this video came up and I was very curious to see if it's just him eating a burger or if there was going to be a twist. The title of the video pretty much tells the whole story, it was just Andy Warhol eating a burger king burger. I felt pretty awkward while watching the video, I felt like I was invading his personal space. Then after he finished he just sat there awkwardly for a couple minutes and I was waiting for him to say something. He finally concludes the video by saying "my name is Andy Warhol and I just finished eating a burger." The whole video was so bizarre.

Eve Sussman- The Artist Project: Eve Sussman
In this video Eve Sussman is commenting on one of her favorite photographers, William Eggelston. His photographs are so simple and pictures of everyday settings, like an oven, a tv room, and a shower. But Eve explains how interesting they are even though they're pictures of things we see everyday, she says that they're all photographed in an incredibly poetic and genius way. She points out so many details that I would have never thought about in these simple photos. She even personifies a picture of architecture, saying it has so much personality and that the awnings are like eyelashes.

Candice Breitz- Thriller - Michael Jackson with Friends chor - Candice Breitz King A Potrait of Michael Jackson 2005
In this video it looks like Candice took separate videos of different people dancing and singing to thriller and then combined them all so it looks like all these people are dancing and singing together. I really liked this video because it was fun to watch how everyone danced to the song, some where so awkward ad others didn't even dance. I'm almost positive she also put Michael Jackson in there but I couldn't really tell because the people were so small.

Shirin Neshat- Women without smiles (Shouts without sound)
This video was pretty depressing, it was in black and white and showed women suffering for most of it. The title tells all, women without smiles, they definitely were not smiling in this video they looked very depressed. Some of it was even disturbing, at one part a woman is digging up another woman who was buried alive.

Marilyn Minter- Green Pink Caviar
This video really grossed me out, it was a women's mouth just licking and devouring different slimey substances like honey and I'm guessing caviar since its in the title. It was so weird I hated watching it but I couldn't stop watching it so if that's what Marilyn's goal was then she was successful.

Further Storyboard

My goal for this project is to show my dad and brother how ridiculous they sound when they're bickering (they don't know I'm using them for a project so it will be interesting to see they're response when I show them). I don't really think they realize they bond over they're hatred for Trump so maybe after they see this they will realize they're more alike than they think.
At first, I was going to use dramatic nature scenes for the visuals, but I want the video to be comical so some people told me that might make the video more serious. Someone actually suggested to get a video of tweetie and silvester fighting while having my brother and dad as a recording in the back. I really like that idea and I think it would give the video more of a comical feel.

Crit response

For the first image my self created item is the picture of the bathroom sign and bathroom area on the bottom of the image. I took a picture of it at a warehouse by my house. I found the fountain image and the restroom "white colored" sign online. The piece of text is in the rainbow color on the bottom.

For the second image the self created image is the little girl (which is a photograph of my when I was little). The man dressed as a woman and the bathroom in the bathroom were found online. The text are the headlines in white.

I got a lot of valuable insight from the critique. The one thing that stuck out to me as well as others was that the image on the left could have felt more cohesive. I definitely agree with that and I struggled throughout this process to make it looks somehow cohesive. The other thing that someone brought up was on the second image, the the little me and the man don't have to same lighting. I agree with that and I tried to fix the lighting on me but I didn't really know how to make it look better because it was taken from an old photograph. Other than those issues I'm happy with the end result.

Story board

Beginning: A father son quote will appear on the video, I haven't decided on a specific one yet.
Middle: The visual is going to be a dramatic storm at sea and we will hear multiple recordings of my dad and brother bickering about literally everything.
End: The visual will now be calm relaxing waves and we will heard recordings of my brother and dad bonding over their hatred for Trump.

Final project

I thought Crystal Nelson's presentation was so unique. I feel like whenever artist's find their comfortable medium to work with they stay with that medium and usually don't branch out. I really appreciate how even though painting was her strongest suit, she tried her best to stay away from it as she got older. I also appreciated how she was able to combine her hobbies and her love for art, I try to do the same with makeup and art. What really amazed me was how she's able to fix or build anything she puts her mind to. The fact that she is actually creating her own 3D printer completely blows my mind.
The movement video made a lot of sense to me because I've already picked up in movies almost every time something bad is about to happen, it storms outside. I do think it's genius though to make the weather express a certain emotion that a person is feeling rather than them telling us.
The editing video was actually really cool. As a viewer I've never noticed how many different ways you could change scenes. Although I have noticed how most movies or tv shows get to the climax of one story and then change scenes to a completely different story.
In the beginning I didn't understand How to Structure a Video Essay. But I partially understand after watching the whole video, it's basically like forming an essay but with a video. By using video to convey "but", "therefore" and "back at the ranch".
I thought the poetry video was pretty interesting. I never thought about how just the visuals and sounds in movies can provoke certain emotions. But after seeing this video I realize that visuals and sounds provoke a lot more emotions than just a talking scene.

Visual Pleasure

This article was very interesting, I never really thought of most of the points that were discussed but it definitely makes sense to me. The movie industry definitely uses scopophilia to their advantage with certain movies.  People watching movies are watching people's lives unfold right in front of them and sometimes even sex. I also agree that Hollywood always makes the women characters objects to the men. The men see a good looking women in a crowd and approaches her, we rarely see a women approach a man. Or a women always has to be the object to the man.

Project 3

How to Ruin a Great Design was a really helpful article because I don't really know much about advertisements. Some things I never even thought about the article pointed out like the letter on the sign that was bigger than the others. After they pointed it out it was annoying how distracting it actually was. This article made me realize that such small details make a huge difference in advertisements.

For this project I wanted to do the controversy of Transgender people going in bathrooms they now identify as. I couldn't find much information of the side against transgender people going in bathrooms they want other than that people are afraid men will dress up as women and rape or molest them in the bathrooms. For my side, (the side for allowing them to go in the bathrooms they identify as) I wanted to somehow incorporate Caitlyn Jenner because I think that would be an effective use of propaganda. For the other side I was thinking of doing a manly guy in the woman's bathroom dressed as a girl but him trying to creep on other girls in the stalls.

Intro to project 3

I mostly get information from twitter or the articles on snapchat. I believe the articles on snapchat more than twitter because they're mostly articles from CNN. If I see something on twitter that I don't necessarily believe I'll either ask my parents or just look it up online.
After reading the articles, I don't really understand why Trump needs to lie about how many people attended his inauguration, I guess I'm just not an ego-maniac like himself. It's actually insulting that he thinks we will believe him over actual proof, a photograph! He's such a narcissist he can't handle that Obama was more popular than him. He also can't handle the fact that Russia helped him to win the election so he has to insult his own Intelligence and call them nazi's and liars. Which if I were him I wouldn't mess with the CIA. He's acting like we're all stupid, like we should believe him over the Intelligence who's job is to protect our country by gathering intelligence on other countries, who quite frankly are way more experienced and trained than Trump.
The last article made me realize that I should probably check what news is real or fake. I never really thought about doing it before because mostly what I read is from CNN.
I read an article of Trump saying that the US is going to become a one-party system and I didn't really believe he'd actually say that. But when I looked it up he actually did say it in an interview. I guess I thought he was a little smarter than he actually is.

Reading/ Vinyl project

I thought Vandals or Visionaries? The Ethical Criticism of Street Art was a fascinating reading because I love when I see street art I think it gives the whole area so much more character. I don't really think street art should be illegal if people are using it for good causes like political statements or awareness. For my project I want to do some sort of political statement. I made a sketch about equality but I'm not sure yet if this is what I want to do.

Response to slides

I love the idea of the first slide (The guy with the tree for hair). I think the idea was very thought out and I like how the artist got it to work with nature so beautifully. I think this mural definitely brings character to this community. I would love to know what the meaning behind this mural is.

Project Process

As of this point I haven't actually started my project on photoshop yet, I just took some pictures. But I plan to get a pretty much empty salon for my background. I going to have 4 different versions of me in the salon interacting with each other and I'm portraying their personalities through makeup and clothes. The focus of my piece is going to be my face with half done makeup and little me's are going to be all over my face putting makeup on it.

In Class Discussion/ Brain storming

1. The class discussion actually helped me pick a scenery I want to create. The class definitely gave me a lot of ideas that I wouldn't have thought of myself. I don't really have any questions that I could think of right now until I actually start the project.

                                                              About the Space

1. I'm creating a makeup salon made up of all different personalities shown through the makeup i choose.
2. I chose this scenery because makeup is a passion of mine and it's a huge part of my identity.
3. I going to take pictures of myself in my living room but find more of a salon scenery online.
4. I want to make the environment very energized and happy because that's how I feel when I'm creating new looks with makeup and that's how I'm going to portray myself in the project.
5. No, other people will not appear in my project.
6. I want to create a happy go-lucky mood.
7. I want the tone to be very bright.

                                                             About Myself

1. I'm going to use different makeup looks to portray different identities of myself.
2. I'm also going to have myself interact with other versions of myself so that can show how I react to other people with different identities.
3. I'm not sure how many versions I'm going to include yet, at the least 5.
4. I plan to make them the same scale so the space will be more believable.
5. I'm going to have to do my makeup and then have on of my roommates take pictures of me during the day.

                                                           Collections
1. I don't intentionally collect things but if I had to put a label on it I'd say I have a collection on lipsticks.
2. The digital world affects what we actually collect. The internet gives us so many options of so many things that you wouldn't fine without going online. For example, if it wasn't for the internet I wouldn't have as many lipsticks as I do because most of them I have to order online, I can't find them in stores.

Multiple Personalities: Christine McConnell

I really like this picture because it encompasses everything that society says a woman should be or be able to do years ago. In the picture all the women are dressed in feminine clothes with their hair and makeup done. All of the women are doing some sort of house work, one it baking multiple are sewing and painting. This picture is showing the multiple tasks women had to accomplish on the daily.

My So Called Opinion

I really liked this article because our opinion are something we never really think about or dissect like this article did. I do think a lot of the point discussed are true like I think we all influence each other's opinions through social media. I think a lot of millennials feel like they can't express some of their conservative opinions because they'll be criticized by the rest of us (which they most likely will be). I do think a lot of millennials accept and embrace racial differences and the LGBTQ community, but i do feel like a lot of people just tolerate them because they don't want to be the odd ball out that says they don't agree with them. But I think it's important that we influence other millenials to be more accepting towards others who are different than them. One paragraph really stood out to me. The author "I like what I like" becomes "but should I like what I like",  and I think all millenials could relate to that. Sometimes you can't voice you own true opinion because you think people will judge you, so you change it to everyone else's opinion.
